On our farm, starter feed is offered from day 1 until calves are fully transitioned to a TMR ration at about 12 weeks of age. Calves are weighed on arrival and at weaning. When we added the TomaHawk to our starter feed the main goal was to improve gut health allowing calves to better fight off respiratory events. While it is hard to measure an increase or decrease in respiratory illness because of so many other factors, we did get an unexpected benefit. We consistently noticed our weaning weights were up by as much as .2 lbs per day. This additional weight at weaning is beneficial for overall animal health and performance.
We have been orally drenching our day old calves with 5ml of TomaHawk iL. The results have been very promising. Calves are more even in size and growth. Overall herd health is much better and we have had virtually no sickness this year. Because of these results we will soon start feeding it in our feedlot cattle on a daily basis.
